Raise your hand if you have white faux fur rugs all over your home?! 🙋I'm pretty sure that I have one or more in every single room. I just love how they add so much character to a room & brighten it up! When you can't do much to the flooring in your home or apartment, rugs are the perfect addition to make a rental more your style.
The only thing that's a bummer is that you're left with stains like the one below. No matter how hard you try to keep stains cleaned up or shoes off the rug, it just never works out the way you plan. I'm pretty sure there's pasta sauce, Doritos crumbs, and Lord only knows what else engrained into these rugs.
Since Chris and I are moving next weekend, I knew that buying new rugs for our new home was out of the question, so I decided to see if giving them a good ol' cleaning would actually work! There weren't very many good tips out there, so I thought I'd do a little experimenting for us all, and find the best technique for truly cleaning white faux fur rugs.
Here's what you'll need //
Oxi Clean Laundry Stain Remover
Downy Fabric Softener
Clorox Bleach
Regular Laundry Detergent
Cat Brush
How to Clean //
One // Shake or vacuum rug to remove large dirt & debris
Two // Spray Oxi Clean on any stains
Three // Place faux fur rug in the washing machine. Pour one usage measurement of bleach in the bleach spot in your washing machine as well as one usage measurement of fabric softener in the fabric softener spot!
Four // Pour in your regular laundry detergent (I used All Free Clear) and run on a normal cycle.
Pro Tip: make sure the fur side is facing down and out so that it gets the most exposure to the water as possible!
Five // Lay the rug out flat to dry.
Six // Using a cat brush, comb through the entire rug.
*Left side has been brushed through after washing.
*Right side has been brushed through after washing.
It's amazing how much extra dirt and matted rug the cat brush will remove. It will leave your rug feeling soft and fluffy again! It does take a little bit of time to get through the rug, but it's so worth it. I would brush each section each direction so that every tangle and knot came out. For a 5x7 foot rug, it took me a little under an hour to brush through, because it was so bad.
After an hour of hard work, it left my rug looking brand new and my wallet stayed happy! Take a look at the before and after pictures below!
