DIY KITCHEN ISLAND UPGRADE

A special thanks to Lowe's for sponsoring this post.

If you have builder-grade cabinets, you know they lack personality. The sides of our cabinets and the island were flat, cheap-looking, and lifeless. I wanted to give them a budget-friendly upgrade to dramatically change our kitchen without doing any major demo. The only demo we had to do was removing the corner trim on the island, which took a matter of seconds!

When it came to figuring out a plan, I knew I loved the built-in look, which turns a builder-grade island into a piece of furniture. This was achieved by adding boards around the sides and front of the island and on our one exposed cabinet side.

We added baseboard trim and quarter round on the island to take everything a step further. We even added quarter round around the base of the kitchen cabinets and it made such a dramatic difference and was so simple to install!

I knew I wanted to add corbels, but I struggled to find ones that were the right size, color, or shape. I found these gorgeous ones that are unfinished, and have a variety of size options, and I stained them to look like I found them at an antique shop. I was thrilled with the color because it ended up perfectly matching our hardwood flooring.

Lastly, with a new island, I had to get new barstools. haha! I am obsessed with the lighter wood tone, and they helped brighten my kitchen so much more than our black metal stools. This project really helped brighten our home and take it from a modern farmhouse to a french farmhouse...our actual dream.

You can find everything I used for this project here.

Stay tuned for the last mini upgrades in our kitchen--coming soon!

Happy projecting!
